Launching ceremony of Radio Sagor Giri FM 99.2 held

Radio Sagor Giri has started its full range of broadcasting as a community radio station with the aim of empowering rural people, accelerating community and introducing more demand for accountability. Mr. A B M Abul Kashem, MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for the Ministry of Commerce launched Radio Sagor Giri FM 99.2 in a colorful ceremony arranged at YPSA HRDC campus, Sitakund on 24 March 2012.Mr.Abdullah Al Baker Bhuyan, Upazila Chairman, Md. Alamgir Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Dr. Eklas Uddin, President, Managing Committee of Sagor Giri and Ms. Suraiya Baker, President of Mohila Parishad, Sitakund were present as special guest in the program.

Mr.AHM Bazlur Rahman, CEO of BNNRC, Mr.Syeed Milky from UNICEF, Mr.SM Shamim Reza, Assistant Professor, Dhaka University, Mr.Shahid Ullah Lipon, Professor, Chittagong University, Mr.Golam Mohammed Nazim Uddin, ED of Betar Bangla (London, UK), Dr. Faheem Hussain, Assistant professor of Asian University for Women and Md. Arifur Rahman, Chief Executive of YPSA addressed at the program. Mr.Shamusuddin Bhuyan (Tutul) , President of the YPSA Executive Committee was presided the event .

Sagor Giri FM99.2 is the first government approved community radio station in Chittagong. YPSA along with BNNRC had been advocating since long to influence policy makers for establishing community radios in the country. Bangladesh government formed a policy in 2010 and approved 14 Community Radios which are located in different areas of the country. Radio Sagor Giri FM 99.2 started its test transmission since November 2011. The network coverage is now around 17 km radius around the station located at Sitakund which also covers some portion of Sandwip islands and Mirsawrai Upazilla of Chittagong.
