Project title: Disaster Preparedness by Ensuring Water and Sanitation (DPE-WATSAN) Facilities in Relief Shelters.

Technical support: Concern Universal- Bangladesh (CUB)

Goal:  
To reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by inadequate water and sanitation provision in emergency relief shelters in targeted areas of Bangladesh’s cyclone belt.

Objective:

  • To provide safe water and sanitary latrines in 20 targeted cyclone shelters (in respect of SPHERE standards).
  • To develop community awareness on use of safe water and sanitary latrines during and after disaster
  • To develop community capacity on constriction, operation and management of water and sanitation facilities during emergencies.

Duration: One year (July 2009-June 2010)

They are very much aware about the shelter management before and after disaster regarding the watsan facilities.

2.3 Meeting with word watsan taskforce

Previously the taskforce meeting did not held. The member were not conscious about the meeting. Word watsan taskforce is now aware for their responsibilities. Taskforce member growing awareness to their community people by meeting for ensuring disaster friendly watsan to their house hold. To proper management of cyclone shelters watsan facilities during the disaster period taskforce member act as change maker to their community.

They decided that in every union parishad meeting will discuss how they will ensure of disaster friendly watsan facilities in their community house hold. They are trying to forbid open defecation and increase of use of latrine and safe water users.

Volunteer training completed October’09. From October-November they conducted meeting. Now the house hold are aware about on disaster friendly watsan and importance use of sanitary toilets and safe water. They are trying to  make safe from water born diseases and keep personal hygiene. They are practicing with soap before taking meal and after use toilet.

Community male group now aware on their health and sanitation. They are creating mass awareness on disaster friendly toilet and tube-well and starting from their house hold.
