Asia Foundation Team Leader Visits YPSA’s Labour Migration Project Interventions

The Asia Foundation’s PERI Program team leader Mr. Mir Junayed Jamal visited the YPSA Labour Migration Project interventions in Rangunia, Chattogram on 15 July 2024. The visit aimed to review the project’s progress, challenges, and impact.

Mr. Junayed was warmly welcomed by YPSA’s Chief Executive and project staff. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with District Employment and Manpower Office (DEMO) Chattogram, Grievance Management Committee (GMC), Youth Volunteer, Remedy seekers, beneficiaries and Subagents. He also observed a social mediation which was conducted by GMC in Rangunia Paurashava, Rangunia, Chattogram.

Mr. Junayed and the Asia Foundation team attended a discussion meeting with subagents. This discussion focused on the benefits and potential scope of the subagent regularization process. The subagents’ representative said the process should collaborate with local DEMO and recruiting agencies. They visited the Fair Migration Support Center in Rangunia Municipality.

The Coalition for Fairer Labor Migration’s PERI program, funded by The Asia Foundation, has been instrumental in facilitating good governance in labor migration sectors. The project also advocates for better policies and practices to protect the rights and welfare of migrant workers.

During his visit, Mr. Junayed also met with Mr. Mohammad Ali, Assistant Director, District Employment and Manpower Office (DEMO) Chattogram. This meeting addressed the barriers and solutions for safe migration in Chattogram, and also discussed the role DEMO can play in the regularization of sub-agents.

This discussion discussed strategies to enhance the project’s impact and sustainability, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy and resource mobilization for safe labor migration.

In his remarks, Mr. Junayed praised YPSA’s dedication and the positive impact of their work on the lives of migrant workers and their families.

“It is inspiring to see the tangible difference that the YPSA Labour Migration Project is making. The comprehensive approach taken by YPSA is commendable and aligns with The Asia Foundation’s commitment to promoting fair and safe migration,” he said.
