In a powerful move to address the contemporary challenges faced by women and girls, YPSA officially kicked off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with a focused campaign in Chattogram on December 7. This year, the organization is strategically spotlighting the critical and growing issue of Gender-Based Digital Violence.
The day’s proceedings, designed for both awareness and engagement, included a vibrant rally, an insightful discussion meeting, an educational quiz, and a collaborative signature campaign. These activities successfully mobilized local citizens, policymakers, and activists in a unified stand against all forms of gender violence.
Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman, Founder and Chief Executive of YPSA, served as the chief guest, using his platform to deliver a stern warning about the escalating crisis. “The digital space, meant to connect and empower, has become a new, frightening frontier for violence against women and girls,” Dr. Arif stated. He highlighted the “growing risks of online harassment, bullying, and digital misuse” that are systematically undermining the safety, mental health, and participation of women in public life. His remarks underscored the necessity of treating digital violence with the same urgency as physical violence.
Abdullah Al Shakir, Web Manager at YPSA, facilitated a crucial session on proactive measures. His segment was dedicated to enhancing digital security and promoting the safer use of social media. Shakir provided participants with essential tools and awareness to protect their online identity, manage privacy settings, recognize phishing and impersonation attempts, and understand legal remedies available against digital abuse.
A Call for Collective Action
YPSA’s initiative sends a clear message: the definition of gender-based violence must evolve to include the digital realm.
By focusing on this timely theme, YPSA is driving the conversation forward, emphasizing that freedom from violence is a right that extends to every virtual interaction. The events culminated in the signature campaign transforming personal commitment into collective action. The successful launch ensures that the 16 Days of Activism in Chattogram will serve as a vital catalyst for digital literacy and policy advocacy to create an online environment that is respectful, safe, and equitable for all.
