“Family planning program in Bangladesh evolved through a series of development phases that took place during the last 52 years. Family planning efforts began in the early 1950s with voluntary efforts of a group of social and medical workers. Currently total fertility rate in Bangladesh is 2.3 and contraceptive prevalence rate is 61%. But, most of them use short-term methods which are not effective way to reduce fertility rate. User of Long-acting and permanent contraceptive methods should be increased” speakers said in a meeting titled “Meeting with selected garment factories to share the key features of the project” held at a hotel in Chittagong. The meeting was organized by YPSA with the help of EngenderHealth Bangladesh on 9 June, 2015.
Dr Sharaf Raj Chowdhury, civil surgeon, Chittagong was present as chief guest the meeting while Dr Sheikh Rukunuddin Ahmed, Deputy Director, Family Planning, Chittagong was the key speaker in the meeting. Md. Shahidul Islam, program manager of YPSA presided over the meeting.
YPSA has started implementation of a project “Engaging Private Sector Workplace to Increase Access and Use of Injectable and LARCs Services” in metropolitan area of Chittagong. Initially 15 garment factories and 10 private clinics will be covered under this project. Garments workers will be given orientation to get the primary health and maternal health services from the selected clinic.
Representatives from 15 garment factories were present in the meeting.
