YPSA Organized Partnership Initiative Program in Plastic Waste Management

A significant milestone in environmental stewardship was celebrated through the event titled “Partnership Initiative in Plastic Waste Management,” held at a Hotel in Chattogram on April 29, 2025. The event marked the achievements of a pioneering initiative jointly led by Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), Unilever Bangladesh, and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA).

Rahedul Karim speech This tripartite collaboration, which began in June 2022, has become a model for multi-sector partnerships addressing the urgent challenge of plastic pollution in Bangladesh’s second-largest city. In his address, CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized the growing threat of plastic pollution and the importance of collective action. “Plastic pollution is a growing challenge. tackling it requires joint efforts from government, private sector, NGOs, and citizens.”

Echoing this sentiment, Shamima Akhter, Director of Corporate Affairs, Partnerships, and Communications at Unilever Bangladesh, stated, “This initiative proves that when governments, NGOs, and the private sector collaborate, scalable solutions are possible. Through this initiative, we are managing approximately 10% of Chattogram’s plastic waste.”

As a key implementation partner, Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) has played a vital role in delivering measurable impact across 41 wards of Chattogram. Through grassroots engagement, inclusive practices, and technical expertise, Project has:

Collected over 24,000 tons of plastic waste, significantly reducing the burden on landfills and open dumping sites.

Trained more than 3,000 waste workers, equipping them with knowledge and tools for safe, dignified, and efficient waste handling.

Formalized 1,827 informal workers—including 154 Bhangariwala and 1,673 waste pickers—by providing business development training, bank account access, and health insurance.

YPSA’s Assistant Director, Md. Abdus Sabur presented a detailed account of the project’s progress, demonstrating how sustained, small-scale actions can lead to transformative urban change.

In her welcome address, Nasim Banu, Director, Social Development, YPSA, reinforced the organization’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and resilience.

A heartfelt segment of the event was the recognition and award ceremony, celebrating the dedication of waste pickers and Cleaning Service Organization (CSOs). These individuals, described as the “silent warriors” of Chattogram, were honored for their critical role in keeping the city clean. The initiative has shown that structured support—such as training, protective gear, and social recognition—can meaningfully uplift lives and systems.

In the event, 3 Waste Pickers and 2 Bhangariwala has been awarded for their best practiced and contribution for the environment in the Chattogram City. Academician, School Teacher, Civil Society Members, Journalist, Youth volunteers, Recyclers, Department of Environment, Chattogram City Corporation and other stakeholders attended here.

Ruhul Quddus Khan, Supply Chain Director, Unilever Bangladesh, delivered the closing remarks, highlighting the strength of the partnership and the need to replicate this model in other urban centers across the country. He also commended YPSA’s strategic role in the project’s success.

The event concluded with a renewed pledge from all partners to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Chattogram—proving that collective action and inclusive systems can drive long-lasting environmental impact.
