Life Insurance Support Extended to Family of Late Plastic Waste Pickers

A milestone for waste pickers’ social protection under YPSA’s Plastic Waste Management Project.

Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr. Shahadat Hossain, graced the event as the Chief Guest at the event by YPSA

On August 7, a brief ceremony was held at the head office of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), Tigerpass, Chattogram to hand over life insurance compensation to the family of the late Muhammad Ismail, a dedicated plastic waste pickers under the Plastic Waste Management Project in Ward 6, CCC. Mr. Ismail (aged 43) passed away on May 9, 2025. In recognition of his contribution and service, a cheque of BDT 150,000 was handed over to his wife, Pakhi Akhter, as a death benefit under the project’s health insurance scheme.

The Honorable Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr. Shahadat Hossain, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Among the Special Guests were Sheikh Mohammad Touhidul Islam, Chief Executive Officer, CCC; Commander Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Conservancy Officer, CCC; Shamima Akhter, Director – Corporate Affairs, Partnerships and Communications, Unilever Bangladesh Ltd.; S M Faisal, PR & Project Manager, Unilever; Muhammad Kamruzzaman, Assistant Managing Director and Chief Corporate Business Officer, MetLife; Mohammad Towhid Hossain, Assistant Vice President – Corporate Business, MetLife; Md. Abdus Sabur, Assistant Director, YPSA; and other dignitaries.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Plastic Waste Management Project to ensure social security for 1,827 waste pickers engaged in the sector. By providing death and accidental benefits, the project demonstrates a responsible and humane approach to worker welfare. As well as this is the first initiatives of YPSA Waste picker Welfare.

The project, implemented across 41 wards of Chattogram City Corporation, has so far brought over 25,000+ tons of plastic waste under the management. The project run by YPSA in collaboration with Chattogram City Corporation and Unilever Bangladesh Ltd.
