In a proactive move to safeguard vulnerable communities from potential landslides, Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) successfully carried out anticipatory action which includes distributions hygiene, kitchen kits and cash support on August 1, 2025, targeting high-risk areas in Chattogram City Corporation and Banshkhali Upazila. The intervention followed an early warning issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and a technical advisory from RIMES on July 31.
The initiative was part of the “Child-Centered Anticipatory Action for Better Preparedness of Communities and Local Government in Northern and Coastal Areas of Bangladesh” project, supported by Save the Children and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO).
A total of 200 vulnerable families received hygiene and kitchen kits, while 100 selected households were supported with unconditional cash transfers of BDT 5,200 each to help meet immediate needs in case of displacement. Additionally, 20 women-led and vulnerable small business owners received conditional cash support of BDT 5,000 each to help protect their livelihoods from economic shocks. This early support helps reduce the impact of potential disasters and protect both lives and livelihoods.
Target areas included Wards 7, 8, 9, and 14 of Chattogram City Corporation and Pukuria, Sadhanpur, Kalipur, and Bailchhari unions in Banshkhali. Coordination was ensured with local government authorities and trained community volunteers for smooth implementation and transparent beneficiary selection.
The timely and targeted anticipatory actions reflect a growing emphasis on forecast-based financing and anticipatory action in Bangladesh, aiming to minimize humanitarian losses and preserve community resilience.
