Revolutionizing Fisheries: YPSA Launches “SMART” Pisciculture Sub-Project for Green Growth through RECP

fish farming project.

In a significant move toward sustainable aquaculture, organization for sustainable development Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) has unveiled a comprehensive sub-project titled “Adopting Technologies and Practices for Resilient Green Growth in Fisheries Sub-sector”. This initiative is a sub-project of broader Sustainable Microenterprise and Resilient Transformation (SMART) project, aims to modernize the fisheries sector across the Chattogram and Feni districts by integrating Resource Efficient and Cleaner production (RECP) and climate-resilient practices.

A Vision for Sustainable Aquaculture

The project is designed to address critical challenges in the current pisciculture landscape, where traditional methods often lead to resource inefficiency and environmental degradation.

The primary objectives of the sub-project include:

  • Adopting Resource Efficiency: Implementing Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) and Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP).
  • Climate Resilience: Introducing technologies that help micro-entrepreneurs mitigate the risks posed by climate change, such as extreme heat and flooding.
  • Capacity Building: Enhancing the technical knowledge and skills of 1,000 targeted micro-entrepreneurs (MEs).
  • Production & Diversification: Increasing overall fish production and promoting the creation of value-added fishery products.
  • Market Access: Facilitating entry into high-value markets for sustainable “green” fish products.

Targeting the Coastal fish farming microenterprises

The 3.5-year project targeting 1000 MEs, scheduled to run until June 2028, focuses on three strategic Upazilas: Mirsarai and Sitakunda in Chattogram, and Sonagazi in Feni. These areas are home to a dense population of fish farmers who are currently vulnerable to climate-induced hazards.

Strengthening the Ecosystem

Beyond individual farm improvements, the sub-project emphasizes “Common Services” to benefit the entire cluster. This includes the digitalization of financial management systems and the establishment of common facilities that allow MEs to access high-quality fish fry from upscaled hatcheries.

The Road Ahead: A Green Revolution

As Bangladesh continues to be a global leader in freshwater fish production, the transition to “green growth” is no longer optional—it is a necessity for long-term survival in a changing climate.

“We are committed to fostering an environment where micro-entrepreneurs can thrive without compromising the ecosystem,” stated YPSA Founder & Chief Executive Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman. By combining financial assistance with cutting-edge technology, the SMART Pisciculture sub-project aims to serve as a blueprint for resilient, profitable, and sustainable aquaculture in Bangladesh.
