A delegation from the World Bank and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) conducted a field visit on 15 January 2026 under the SMART (Sustainable Market Access and Recycling Transformation) Project in the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) area.
Funded by the World Bank and PKSF and implemented by YPSA, the SMART Project is being implemented across 41 wards of Chattogram City Corporation. The project aims to directly benefit 300 plastic recyclers, contributing significantly to sustainable urban waste management and the promotion of an environmentally friendly circular economy.
As part of the visit, the delegation held an important coordination meeting with officials of Chattogram City Corporation to discuss guidance, collaboration, and direct support from the City Corporation for effective implementation of the SMART Project across all 41 wards.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Pranab Kumar Sharma, Honorable Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer of Chattogram City Corporation, stated:
“The SMART Project is a timely initiative for environmental protection and sustainable urban management. Strengthening the capacity and skills of plastic recyclers will lead to positive improvements in the city’s waste management system. Chattogram City Corporation will extend its full cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of this project.”
During the visit, the delegation inspected factories of both existing and potential beneficiary plastic recyclers to observe their operations, challenges, and future opportunities. In addition, a community consultation meeting was organized with plastic recyclers at Mansur Market in Halishahar to better understand future needs and development plans.
The consultation emphasized how environmentally responsible practices can help recyclers expand their businesses while ensuring sustainability and profitability.
The visiting delegation expressed optimism that the YPSA-SMART Project will play a crucial role in delivering sustainable solutions for plastic waste management, improving the livelihoods of plastic recyclers, and contributing to the overall environmental development of Chattogram city.
