On February 25, The International Labour Organization (ILO) Team visited YPSA to observe its integrated initiatives on Plastic Waste Management, Plastic Recycling, and Plastic Circularity in the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) area.
The visit began at YPSA Head Office in Chattogram, where the Senior Management Team (SMT) and relevant project staff presented the organization’s expertise, ongoing interventions, and measurable achievements in plastic waste management. The discussion focused on best practices, operational challenges, innovative solutions, and opportunities for collaboration and scaling successful models.
Under the Plastic Waste Management Intervention in Chattogram City Corporation area, YPSA has facilitated the collection of over 30,000+ tons of plastic waste from June 2022 to January 2026, significantly contributing to improved waste segregation and recycling systems. The initiative has also formalized informal waste workers, bringing more than 1,800 waste pickers and 150+ collection service organizations (CSOs) under insurance coverage, enhancing their social protection and financial security.
Through the SMART Project promoting sustainable growth in the plastic recycling sub-sector through Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) practices, microenterprises have strengthened productivity, resource efficiency, and climate resilience.
Additionally, under the regional plastics circularity initiative supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), YPSA is working to collect 15,000 tons of plastic waste across Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Tangail while supporting approximately 2,000 beneficiaries. The project promotes circular business models, gender-responsive traceability mechanisms, youth-led recycling startups, and strengthened stakeholder collaboration.
