In a significant move toward economic empowerment, Tasnim Jahan, Additional District Commissioner (ADC) of Cox’s Bazar, led the distribution of sewing machines, electrical house wiring kits, and farming supplies to climate-refugee women and children. The initiative, implemented by YPSA and funded by Solidar Suisse, targeted the vulnerable communities of Nazirartek and Choufaldandi in Cox’s Bazar.

Serving as the event’s Chief Guest, Additional District Commissioner Tasnim Jahan emphasized the importance of skill-based empowerment for those displaced by environmental changes. During her keynote address at the Arunoday School auditorium, she praised the initiative for offering a “second chance” at self-sufficiency.

“Our lives are like the sun—we must seize every opportunity to shine,” Tasnim Jahan stated. “To those receiving these tools today: do not just use them, master them. Achieve excellence so that you may eventually become teachers for others in your community. YPSA’s commitment to this cause is truly exemplary.

Speech by Chief Guest

The ceremony was presided over by Md. Shahidul Islam, Deputy Director and Regional Head of YPSA, who was joined by several high-ranking officials, including:

  • Sumaiya Binte Afsar & Md. Kamrul Islam (Assistant Commissioners)

  • Hasan Masud (Deputy Director, Dept. of Social Services)

  • Ahmed Ullah (Labor Inspector)

Md. Shahidul Islam shared a powerful success story of a former trainee from Banshkhali who transformed from a beneficiary into a successful entrepreneur. “Our goal is to see today’s recipients become the job creators of tomorrow,” he noted.

Assistant Commissioner Md. Kamrul Islam highlighted that with 3.5 million child laborers in Bangladesh, collective NGO and government intervention is vital.

Labor Inspector Ahmad Ullah noted that while 18% of the population lives below the poverty line, targeted support from organizations like YPSA is closing the gap.

The event was also attended by YPSA Project Manager Hosne Ara Rekha, and Project Officers Abidur Rahman, Jahedul Islam, Md. Yusuf, Tofayelur Rahman, and Ali Adnan, along with various beneficiaries of the organization.
