In a powerful tribute to International Women’s Day, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Mohammed Shahadat Hossain declared that ensuring the active participation of women in disaster risk management is a “demand of the times.” Speaking at a high-profile event in the city, the Mayor emphasized that sustainable development is impossible without genuine women’s empowerment.
The event, titled “International Women’s Day Celebration and Award Ceremony in Recognition of Women’s Brave and Active Roles in Disaster Management,” organized by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) at the conference hall of Hotel Agrabad, on March 8. The gathering focused on the theme: “Step it up for Gender Equality: Protect the Rights of Women and Girls.”
Supported by the German Federal Foreign Office and Save the Children, the ceremony highlighted the unique vulnerabilities women face in disaster-prone areas like Chattogram, particularly regarding landslides and natural calamities.
Highlights of the Celebration:
Recognition of Excellence: 70 women volunteers and micro-entrepreneurs were honored with awards for their fearless contributions to disaster management.
Empowerment through Entrepreneurship: Mayor Shahadat praised YPSA for its role in fostering female leadership and economic independence at the community level.
Inspiring Narratives: A documentary showcased the life struggles and successes of accomplished women, while marginalized participants shared personal stories that moved the audience.

The event successfully fostered an environment of participation, including a quiz session designed to engage the audience on the realities of disaster management.
