An inception workshop titled “Promoting Sustainable Growth in the Plastic Recycling Sub-Sector through RECP Practices” was successfully organized today in Chattogram, under the Sustainable Microenterprise and Resilient Transformation (SMART) Project by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA).
The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, law enforcement, academia, development organizations, media, and plastic recycling entrepreneurs. Among the distinguished participants were Mr. Ashraful Amin, Chief Executive Officer of Chattogram City Corporation; Mr. Pranob Kumar Sharma, Deputy Chief Conservancy Officer of Chattogram City Corporation; Mr. Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle); Ms. Rumana Akter, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment; Mr. ATM Shahjahan, Assistant Professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET); Mr. Atish Chakma, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence; Mr. Shamsuddin Illias, Bureau Chief of The Business Standard; Mr. Kamrul Hasan Badol, Associate Editor of Dainik Suprovat Bangladesh; Mr. Enamul Hasan, District Coordinator of BRAC; and Mr. Md. Eakub Ali, Program Manager (Training) of CODEC. Plastic recyclers from 41 wards, along with project and YPSA officials, also participated in the event.
The workshop commenced with a welcome speech by Mr. Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, Director of YPSA. In his remarks, he stated,
“Plastic waste management is no longer just an environmental concern; it is also an economic opportunity. Through the SMART project, we aim to make this sector more organized, environmentally friendly, and economically viable.”
A comprehensive presentation was delivered highlighting the objectives, activities, and expected outcomes of the SMART project. The session emphasized the adoption of environmentally sound technologies, waste reduction, resource efficiency, and financial and technical support for entrepreneurs in the plastic recycling sector.
Mr. Ashraful Amin, CEO of Chattogram City Corporation, remarked,
“Effective plastic waste management requires strong coordination between local government and private initiatives. Additionally, innovation in alternatives to plastic can further strengthen urban management systems.”
Ms. Rumana Akter, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment, stated,
“RECP practices are crucial for environmental protection. This project will encourage entrepreneurs to adopt environmentally friendly practices. The Department of Environment will provide necessary support for environmental certification.”
Media representatives appreciated the initiative, highlighting its timeliness and potential to raise awareness.
During the open discussion session, participants shared insights on challenges and opportunities related to plastic collection, processing, and market linkage, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts.
It is pointed that the SMART project aims to enhance the capacity of micro-entrepreneurs in the plastic recycling sector, promote environmentally sustainable production practices, and ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The workshop concluded successfully with active participation and constructive discussions, followed by a closing remark delivered by the Chair, Mr. Palash Kumar Chowdhury.
