YPSA observed World No Tobacco Day 2011 in 11 districts of the country

YPSA observed World No Tobacco Day 2011 in 11 districts and four sub-districts of Chittagong on 31 May . Different programmes have been chalked out to mark the day. YPSA arranged rally, demonstration, seminars and dialogues with the concerned government officials, NGOs and civil society organizations.

Chittagong

Dialogue session: In Chittagong YPSA at the first hour of the day arranged a Dialogue session with Civil Surgeon office of Chittagong where the Director of Health was the chief guest of the meeting. The meeting was participated by different groups like physicians, coalition members, journalist, government officials, and civil society organizations. The Acting Civil Sargon DR. Morshedul Karim Chowdhury has presided over the meeting and the key note paper was presented by Dr. Nuruddin Md. Tarek, a consultant doctor of Chittagong General Hospital. The welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Mahabubar Rahman, Director, YPSA. The speakers have emphasized on the need of urgent measure to take action for amend the existing national Tobacco control law in compliance with Frame Work Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Rally: A colorful rally was arranged demanding for an effective tobacco control law in line with Frame Work Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The Director of Health has inaugurated the rally where people from NGOs and civil society have participated. Speakers raised voice to stop cultivation of tobacco and increase tax on tobacco products.

Comilla

A massive rally was arranged where the Civil Surgeon has started the rally demanding a for a tobacco free society and a change of the existing law. The Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Siddique has led the rally with the participants from NGOs, Civil society organizations, Coalition members and etc. The president of BMA Dr. Anwarul Azim Siddique and ADM Md. Nazrul Islam also participated in the rally.

After the rally a discussion meeting was arranged which was presided over by ADM Md. Nazrul Islam and the District Civil Surgeon was the chief guest of the meeting.

B. Baria

A colorful rally was arranged where the Civil Surgeon has started the rally demanding a for a tobacco free society and a change of the existing law. The Civil Surgeon Dr. Dr. Sorforaz khan has led the rally with the participants from NGOs, Transport federation, Civil society organizations, Coalition members and etc. The president of BMA Dr. Abu Sayed Khan also participated in the rally.

A discussion meeting also was arranged which was presided over by Dr. Abu Sayed Khan and the District Civil Surgeon Dr. Sorforaz khan was the chief guest of the meeting.

Chandpur

A colorful and massive rally was organized where the Civil Surgeon has started the rally demanding a for a tobacco free society and a change of the existing law. The Civil Surgeon Dr. Shahanewaz khan has led the rally with the participants from NGOs, Transport federation, Civil society organizations, Coalition members and etc.

A discussion meeting also was arranged which was presided over by Civil Surgeon Dr. Shahanewaz Khan and the Additional Magistrate Mr. Faridul Isalam was the chief guest of the meeting.

Coxbazar

The world No tobacco day observed in Coxbazar by organizing rally and dialogue session . The events were arranged by the District taskforce with the support of YPSA. The rally was led by the District Commissioner and the President of the district tobacco control taskforce Mr. Gias Uddin Ahmed. The District Civil Surgeon Dr. Kajol Kanti Barua, also participated by different groups like physicians , coalition members, journalist, government officials, and civil society organizations.

A discussion meeting also arranged where all the taskforce members including participants from physicians , coalition members, journalist, government officials, and civil society organizations. The District Civil Surgeon Dr. Kajol Kanti Barua presided over the meeting where the DC Mr. Gias Uddin Ahmed was the chief guest.

Rangamati

The world No tobacco day observed in Coxbazar by organizing rally and dialogue session . The events were organized by YPSA and District Health Department. The meeting was presided by the District Civil Surgeon Dr. Manisha Chakma and also addressed by the Deputy civil surgeon Dr. Mostafijur Rahman, Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Sneh Chakma, District health officer Shashoti Gupta, Senior health officer Sugota chakma, also participated by different groups like physicians , coalition members, journalist, government officials, and civil society organizations.

Noakhali

A colorful and massive rally was organized where the District Commissioner Md. Sirajul Islam has started the rally demanding a for a tobacco free society and a change of the existing law. The Civil Surgeon Dr. Ahmed Hossain Khan has led the rally with the participants from NGOs, Transport federation, Civil society organizations, Coalition members and etc. The ADC Mr. Ataur Rahman also present in the rally

A discussion meeting also was arranged which was presided over by the Civil Surgeon Dr. Ahmed Hossain Khan and the Md. Sirajul Islam was the chief guest of the meeting.

Sitakund

A rally and a discussion meeting also arranged in Sitakund areas. YPSA and Sitakund Disable Forum organized the events jointly . There are participants from all level who demanded a smoke free environment for the women and children and also demanded for a strict law on tobacco control.

Laxmipur

The world No tobacco day observed in Laxmipur by organizing rally and dialogue session . The rally was led by the District Civil Surgeon Dr. Saleh Uddin Sharif, and also addressed by the Medical officer Mr. Jakir Hossain. The meeting also participated by different groups like coalition members, journalists, government officials, and civil society organizations. Later a rally was also arranged in the downtown areas with the participation of different NGOs and civil society organizations.

Feni

YPSA in coordination with FHDH (Feni Human Development Foundation) organized events to follow the World no Tobacco Day. A rally was started from the civil surgeon office and round all over down-town of Feni city. A meeting is arranged after the rally where the civil surgeon (acting ) has presided over the meeting and the meeting was also addressed by the Health and Family planning officer Dr. Md. Kazi Ali Akbar and the meeting was moderated by the Education officer Mr. Saif Uddin. There were some other participants were from different NGOs like FHDF, FHDF, Renaissance, YPSA , ABCD and etc.

Banshkali

A discussion meeting was arranged after a colorful rally in Banshkhali to observe the World no Tobacco Day. The meeting was arranged in the office of vice-chairman of Banshkhali upazilla parishad. The meeting were presided by the president of Banshkhali press club Mr. Anupam Kumar Abhi and the vice –chairman of Banshkhali upazilla parishad Mr. Noor Hossain was the chief guest of the meeting, the chairman of Sheelkup union Mr. M. Aktar Hossain was the special guest of the meeting.

Chagol Naya

On the occasion World No Tobacco Day the program held on 31 may at Chagalnaiya Union parishad office. The Chief guest of the meeting was Upzilla chairman Haji Nur ahmad , Special guest were Vice chairman Abu ahmed Bhuyan, Social Welfare Officer Kamrul Passa Bhuyan & A D Abul Kashem Jubo bUnnyon Adidoftar. The program presided by Mr Momin-ur-Rashed, UNO of Chagalnaiya Upzilla.

Kagrachori

On the eve of World no Tobacco Day a discussion meeting was arranged in Khagrachori at the office of district Civil Surgeon which was organized by District health office and YPSA. The meeting was presided over by the civil surgeon Dr. Hasan Imam while the Chairman of the Jilla Parishad Mr. Kujendra Laal Tripura was the chief guest of the meeting. There were some other guest who were present there as special guests like –District Commissioner (DC) of Khagrachori Mr. Anisul Haq Bhuyan, the chairman of the Khagrachori upazilla (main) Mr. Shane Alam, Upazilla Health and Family Planning officer Dr. Md. Shahid Talukdar, Regional Medical officer Dr. Sanjib Tripura, Senior education officer Memong Marma and others. The key note paper was presented by Dr. ANM Bodrul Islam.
Before the meeting a rally was arranged where the civil surgeon has led the rally demanding a positive and effective change of the tobacco control law of the country.

Banderban

A very colorful rally was arranged on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day in Banderban followed by a discussion meeting where the Additional District Commissioner (Revenue) Mr. Md. Nurul Islam has led the meeting as the chief guest of the events , and ADC General Mr. Sohel Imam Khan was the special guest and the rally also participated by the Upazilla Chairman Md. Abdul Kuddus, Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Sakwat Hosain . The meeting was also participated by representatives from NGOs, media, local government and civil society and etc.
