A day-long training titled “Climate Vulnerability and Climate Resilient RECP” was organized to enhance the capacity of entrepreneurs in the plastic recycling sector to address climate change risks and promote environmentally sustainable production practices. The training was organized by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) under the Sustainable Microenterprise and Resilient Transformation (SMART) Project, funded by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). The event was held at the auditorium of Mamata Training Centre in Chattogram, on 21 July 2026.
The training commenced with a welcome address and inaugural remarks delivered by Mr. Manzur Murshed Chowdhury, Director, Economic Development, YPSA.
A total of 25 plastic recyclers and scrap (Vangari) business members participated in the training. The first technical session was conducted by Dr. Iqbal Sarwar, Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Chittagong. He discussed the relationship between the environment and climate, the causes and impacts of climate change, climate risks, and strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The session on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) was facilitated by Mr. Mohiuddin, Environment and Social Officer, SMART Project, YPSA. He explained the concepts of RECP, efficient resource utilization, cleaner production techniques, waste reduction, energy and resource conservation, and practical approaches to implementing RECP in industrial enterprises.
The session on Decent Work Environment and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was conducted by Mr. Mohammad Shahedul Islam, Sustainability and Compliance Officer at Visual Knitwear Limited. He delivered practical insights on workplace health and safety, energy efficiency, LEED certification, chemical management, and waste management to promote safe and sustainable industrial practices.
The session on Gender and Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) was facilitated by Nazmun Nahar, MIS and Documentation Officer, SMART Project, YPSA. She discussed gender sensitivity in the workplace, prevention of sexual harassment, and the importance of establishing an effective grievance redress mechanism to ensure a safe and inclusive working environment.
The entire training programme was moderated by Mr. Delowar Hossain, Project Manager, SMART Project, YPSA. Also present at the event were Mr. Newaz Mahmud, Assistant Director and Focal Person of the SMART Project; Mr. Kamrul Islam, Manager of Halishahar Branch; and Mr. Engineer Shahidul Islam, Technical Officer, SMART Project, YPSA.
The training equipped participants with practical knowledge on climate resilience, resource-efficient production, occupational health and safety, environmental management, gender-sensitive workplaces, and grievance redress mechanisms, enabling them to adopt more sustainable and climate-resilient business practices in the plastic recycling sector.
