Journalism requires more than gathering facts and reporting news; practical experience is essential for developing professional skills. To gain this experience, students from Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies visited Community Radio Sagor Giri in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
During the visit, Tofail Hossain, Area Manager of YPSA’s Sitakunda Branch, introduced the students to YPSA and provided an overview of its activities. Tufayelur Rahman, Program Officer, gave the students a detailed briefing on the activities, broadcasting system, and various programmes of Radio Sagor Giri.
Also present during the visit were Jahangirnagar University Associate Professor Amina Islam, and Programme Producers Shahed Uddin and Nayan Hasan.
The discussion focused on the role of community radio and how it highlights the lives, livelihoods, agriculture, health, education, challenges, and opportunities of local communities through the media. The students were also introduced to the ways community radio serves as a platform for local voices and community development.
Later, the students visited the on-air studio of Radio Sagor Giri. They also observed the control panel, newsroom, and audio editing room. They had the opportunity to observe firsthand how a radio programme is planned, prepared, recorded, edited, and ultimately broadcast.
Alongside the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom, the students gained practical experience of the various aspects of broadcast journalism and radio production.
According to the students, field visits of this kind help broaden their understanding of the realities beyond the classroom and play an important role in developing the skills and practical experience needed for their future careers.
