The regional MPOWER/FCTC workshop held from 3rd to 8th February 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand organized by The UNION. The workshop was based on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the six elements of the MPOWER package of policy measures: M – Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies, P – Protect people from tobacco smoke, O – Offer help to quit tobacco use, W – Warn about the dangers of tobacco, E – Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship and R – Raise taxes on tobacco. A total of 53 Participants from Bangladesh, India, Srilanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand and China participated in the workshop.
The contents were grouped according to the eight parts of the workshop:
- Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
- Protect people from tobacco smoke
- Warn about the dangers of tobacco: packaging and labelling
- Warn about the dangers of tobacco: mass media communications
- Raise taxes on tobacco
- Offer help to quit tobacco use
- Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies
- Developing an action plan
At the end of the workshop each country has developed their country action plan based on workshop learning through reviewing their existing tobacco control situation.
The faculties from different country were conducted sessions. Besides that participants from each participant country have also presented country lesson learn and success case studies. A total of 53 Participants from Bangladesh, India, Srilanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand and China have been participated in the workshop. 14 participants from Bangladesh including Government and NGO sector have been participated. Nasim Banu, Team Leader, Smoke free project of YPSA has participated in the workshop.
