Under the Sustainable Microenterprise and Resilient Transformation (SMART) Project, a vibrant Quiz Competition, Discussion Session, and Rally were organized to celebrate World Environment Day 2026 under the theme “Climate Change: Today’s Action for Tomorrow’s Safety.” The event was held as part of the initiative titled “Promoting Sustainable Growth in the Plastic Recycling Sub-sector through RECP Practices.”
The programme was organized by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) with the support of the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF).
The event began with an engaging environmental quiz competition involving young participants. The quiz focused on environmental conservation, plastic pollution, and sustainable lifestyles, providing an opportunity for participants to demonstrate their knowledge and awareness of these critical issues.
The welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Delowar Hossain, Project Manager of the SMART Project. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of active youth participation in protecting the environment and combating plastic pollution, stating that collective action is essential for building a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The keynote resource person, Dr. Md. Iqbal Sarwar, Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Chittagong, delivered an insightful presentation highlighting global environmental initiatives, the current state of plastic consumption worldwide, the realities of plastic use in Bangladesh, and the growing impact of plastic waste in Chattogram city. He also shared practical strategies for reducing plastic use, promoting recycling, and adopting environmentally friendly alternatives.
Another resource person, Ms. Khaleda Akter, Assistant Head Teacher of Mohammadnagar H.K.C. High School, delivered an inspiring speech encouraging young people to adopt simple positive habits in their daily lives to help build a cleaner, greener, and more livable city.
Following the presentations, an open discussion session was held, where participants shared their views and recommendations on environmental conservation, plastic waste management, and climate change mitigation.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Newaz Mahmud, Assistant Director and Focal Person of YPSA, who chaired the programme, stated that environmental protection should not be limited to a single observance day but should be embraced as an ongoing social responsibility. He stressed that greater awareness and collective action, led by young people, can contribute significantly to building a greener and more sustainable future.
The programme concluded with a colorful rally aimed at raising public awareness about environmental conservation and the prevention of plastic pollution.
