Orientation workshop on Role of institutional policy in strengthening Smoking and Tobacco Control Act 2005″ held in Comilla on 4th January 2010 with support from CFTFK and BI.
Councilors of Comilla Municipality and representatives from Journalist, market authority, government, doctors, lawyers, teacher, religious leader, NGO and Civil society have participated in the workshop. Darpan and PIDS have provided support to organize the workshop. Dr. Samir Kanti Sarker, Acting Civil Surgeon, Comilla district was presented as a Chief Guest, Dr. Azizur Rahman, Secretary, Bangladesh Medical Association of Comilla District was presented as special guest. Mr. Mahbub Morshed, Executive Director of Darpan and Mr. Ikram Ahmed Rana, Executive Director of PIDS were delivered their welcome speech.
In the workshop, harms of second hand smoking, importance, role and development process of institutional policy and role of Coalition have been discussed and Ms. Nasim Banu, Team Leader, YPSA has delivered a slide presentation on these topics. Participants have agreed to work as a coalition member and they identified some action points for protecting people from harms of secondhand smoking. In the workshop, 3 participants have given commitment to quit smoke and the president of Village doctors welfare committee has declared that they will ensure smoke free all Village Doctor’s Chambers, all pharmacy of 16 Upazillas in Commilla.
