The ‘Job Fair 2026’ under the Recovery and Advancement of Informal Sector Employment (RAISE) project, organized by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), was held on June 11 at the Asian SR Hotel in Chattogram. The event aimed to develop the skills of young men and women working in the informal sector and expand their employment opportunities.
Organized with the support of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and the World Bank, the job fair was inaugurated by Ms. Mosammat Rasheda Akter, Deputy Director of the Chattogram Divisional Office under the Ministry of Local Government. Special guests included Atia Chowdhury, Deputy Director of the Department of Women Affairs; Mohammad Abul Bashar, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth Development; and Jasim Uddin, Director of the Department of Social Services.
The discussion session was chaired by Ms. Nasim Banu, Director of the Social Development Division. Mr. Newaz Mahmud, Assistant Director, was also present. The program was moderated by Ms. Farhana Idris, Assistant Director at YPSA.
Speaking as the chief guest, Ms. Mosammat Rasheda Akter said the informal sector plays an important role in the national economy. She noted that initiatives such as the RAISE project are timely and relevant for enhancing workers’ skills and expanding employment opportunities in this sector. She added that, in today’s world, skills development and technical training, alongside formal education, are essential foundations for professional success.
Special guest Atia Chowdhury said skills are one of the most valuable assets in the present era. She emphasized that employment-focused training plays an important role in helping young people become self-reliant, and encouraged women not only to receive training but also to establish themselves as entrepreneurs.
Mohammad Abul Bashar, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth Development, said Bangladesh’s young population is one of the country’s greatest strengths. He stated that if proper training and employment opportunities are ensured, this youth potential will further accelerate national development.
In her welcome remarks, Ms. Nasim Banu, Director of Social Development at YPSA, said the RAISE project is being implemented to rehabilitate informal sector workers affected during the post-COVID-19 period, improve their skills, and ensure sustainable livelihoods. She said that, under the project, 1,308 people have received training and loan support, while 866 have completed six-month skills development training.
RAISE Project Coordinator Mostaq Ahmed presented the project’s key activities through a PowerPoint presentation.
Around 150 trained young men and women, along with 10 to 12 employer organizations, participated in the job fair. Participants had the opportunity to apply for jobs directly. An orientation session was also held on CV preparation and job interview techniques. Crests of honor were presented to the participants, while successful apprentices and MCPs shared their experiences. Appointment letters were handed over to four apprentices.
