Bangladesh Sub-National Smoke-Free Project Workshop ended

“Smoking is one of the worse threats for human health in our country. Its not possible to ensure smoke-free with the action taken by any one, only the coalition of all the concerned NGOs, Civil Society groups, Govt. bodies, Media and all the concerned institutions and individuals can make the real change.”

The speakers said in a meeting with the Coalition members on the 2nd day of the workshop where some of the coalition members of the Smoke-Free campaign in Chittagong joined to share their experience with the workshop participants. The two –day workshop today, on 12th November 2009 ended at YPSA-HRDC, organized by YPSA and PROGGA in cooperation with Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CFTFK), The Union and Bloomberg Initiatives. The opening session, of day 2, was organized at Zilla Parishad in Chittagong and several Councilors of the Chittagong City Corporation who were Mr. Gias Uddin, Mr. Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Ms. Shaheda Kashem Shathy, Ms. Rehena Kabir Ranu, and several representatives from different groups also addressed in the program. The speakers emphasized that the people who smoke should be more responsible about the passive effect of smoking which caused serious effect on the public health.

The workshop is participated by the representatives from different NGOs, around the country, working on the Smoke-Free Campaign like- WBB Trust, ACLAB, AID, BICD, ACD, BCDP, PUP, NATAB, Shimantik, Chittagong City Corporation, Darpan-Comilla, Cox’s Bazar Municipality, Feni Human Development Foundation, YPSA and PROGGA.

The negural session was presided by Dr. Rezaul Karim, Director, Department of Health, Chittagong. The session were taken on the issues like –Overview: The need of Smoke-Free Environment, Harms of Smoking, Regional and International Smoke-Free Progress, Enforcing Smoke Free Legislation-GO and NGO Collaboration, Status of GO-NGO partnerships, Air Quality Monitoring, Advocacy and building coalitions . And the sessions were taken by Ms. Anuradha Khanal, Program Officer, CFTFK, Ms. Shoba John, Smoke Free Expert, CFTFK, Dr. Md. Akramul Islam, Technical Consultant, The Union, Mr. Saifuddin Ahmed, Executive Director, WBB Trust, Mr. Md. Arifur Rahman, Chief Executive, YPSA, Md. Taifur Rahman, Chairman, PROGGA, Md. Shahajahan, CEO, BCCP.
